Master Food and Nutrition Education

The Master Food and Nutrition Education Program provides participants with intensive education in nutrition, food preservation, preparation, and safety.  Participants who complete the program are certified Master Food and Nutrition Educators.

These trained volunteers provide leadership and service to their community in food and nutrition activities.  This service consists of such things as: answering clients questions, helping at health fairs and conducting food demonstrations In Florida, where the program began in 1993, the Master Food and Nutrition Educators are sponsored by the University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service in Gainesville.  Presently, seven counties have active Master Food and Nutrition Education Programs

Becoming a Volunteer

After receiving 50 hours of intensive foods and nutrition training and satisfactorily passing a final examination, newly certified volunteers are required to serve 50 volunteer hours.  Volunteers may serve their hours by assisting the Extension Agent, working with youth and senior groups, helping the handicapped and underprivileged, and assisting with community organizations in various efforts.

Many Volunteers far exceed the required 50 service hours.  The personal satisfaction derived from participation in this community service program motivates them to continue in the program beyond the first year.

Advanced Training

The learning process never ends.  Additional programs and field trips update knowledge in a wide variety of foods and nutrition areas.  These programs are offered on a monthly basis.

How to Become A Master Food and Nutrition Educator

The desire to help others is a first and absolute requirement.  A personal commitment to complete the required training and to serve a minimum of 50 volunteer service hours after completing training is equally important.  Training is usually conducted in February and March.  To be considered to volunteer, you will need to contact the Family and Consumer Sciences Program at 904-387-8855 to acquire an application.  A nominal fee will be charged for program supplies and materials when you are selected as a volunteer.  Enrollment is limited; selection is highly competitive.
